Gavin's 1st Birthday!

Last weekend, Jay and Caroline and I headed to SC to celebrate this CUTE nephew of ours FIRST Birthday!
I can't believe it has been a whole year since he was born and a whole year since I was SO stinkin' sick-pregnant with miss love bug. I am enjoying this year's September SO much more!

Anyway, it was a blast to get to celebrate this awesome little man who is SO.DARN.CUTE. He is walking already, and such fun, fun, fun to play with.
Lyndsey did a great job decorating an making this huge cupcake for Gavin!
A little shy when it came to just digging into that ultra-sweet icing and cake...
But he got the hang of it, realized it was yummy, and that everyone was watching! Such a cutie pie!
Caroline was taking in all the Cake eating action from her Great Mema's lap and as content as ever.
LOVE that girl :)
When we went shopping for Gavin, Uncle Jay was SO excited to pick out a Tee Ball set! Gavin was just excited to walk around with the bright yellow bat...
Caroline thinks playing Airplane with Daddy is the best :)
 Sweet Cousins!
Uh oh! Wrapping Paper can be used to play Tee Ball with Caroline's head right?! Luckily Aunt Leah was there! These two are only 7 months apart and its going to be so fun to see them grow up together...

And especially now because Gavin, and Chris and Lyndsey are moving to Virginia!!

Our House is about to get really exciting and BUSY, because The Bate's family is re-locating to Virginia, Chris is starting as a Restaurant Leader for Jay at Chick-fil-A, and they are going to being living with us for several weeks while Chris and Lyndsey figure out where in Waynesboro they want to live. We are thrilled and excited to welcome family so much closer.
We love you guys, and are excited to be a part of this next step in your family's journey!

5 MONTHS!

Yesterday, Big Girl turned 5 MONTHS! Oh my... thats all I need to say about that.

She is a pure joy
So serious and inquisitive at times, and so smily and giggly too! {She giggled for the first time this past month and it was the BEST! Music to these Mama ears}
Caroline, you're still our drool bug... but no teeth yet.
And you are so good at holding your head up and started rolling all the way over last week!
You are still very laid back. Just go with the flow. A great traveler and put up with Mama and Daddy's crazy schedules and life plans like a champ. You obviously were created just for us, and we adore you! Thanks for being such an EASY baby. You are spoiling me sweet girl.
Caroline, you LOVE toys, and it seems like everyday you are more and more interested in all the fun things around you. This ball is one of your favorites because it is so easy to grab, very colorful, and apparently you like to play with it with your feet too!
You are in 6 month clothes and getting very, very close to size 3 diapers. Bath time is still your FAVORITE. You go to sleep easily just as long as you have your blanket and your noisy fan. Thankfully, your like your mama in that. Now if we can just get rid of those 4 am wake-ups that started when we put you in your crib at night.... but honestly, mama doesn't mind that sweet quiet time with you so much. I know that that this precious baby stage will be over before I know it...
Girlfriend, you are beautiful, and growing more so everyday. We love to see your personality develop and see the new skills you master. Keep growing love bug... just maybe not SO fast?

we're getting things rolling...

Caroline is quite the wiggle worm and is very active and has always liked to look around and bounce and squirm, but she was a little behind on the rolling all the way over thing... but then this past Tuesday, I saw this face:
 The Face of Determination.

Lucky for us Gram was in town and she ran to get her camera!
By the time Gram got back, Caroline was working hard, and had kicked herself onto her side. It was as if she had been thinking about the best way to roll over in a quick skinny minute for weeks!
And she realized she had an audience and got pretty proud of herself :)
And then she figured out how to get her arm situated, and she was ALL THE WAY OVER! Officially rolled from back to tummy!

GO BIG GIRL, GO!
And then Caroline got tired... but she did it! And since Tuesday, she has turned into a roly poly bug... practicing at every chance. My sweet pea is growing up, and I love to see her do new things and tackle new obstacles, but it happens so darn fast!

AND, we think Caroline picked Tuesday to mark this big milestone, because it was also the day that this precious babe made his arrival:
Canon Andrew Schultz

My dear friend, Katie & her hubby Aaron welcomed this handsome guy on September 4th and we are thrilled he is here and healthy. Its great to finally see that sweet face!
Caroline is excited to meet her new friend soon!

More about our $20 DIY Shelves

Y'all, I just love, love, love these shelves.
They are a pottery Barn knock off.... And the BEST part is that they only cost $20!! Like I mentioned in my Living room update last week, my dear friend Shannon made one for her home, and shared THIS tutorial with me. So thankful!

We followed Shanty 2 Chic's instructions to a tee and it only took my sweet husband about 45 minutes to nail these babies together and for me to apply the first coat of stain. I used a Rust-Oleum "Kona" Wood Stain and it went on great. I also used a old tee shirt to rub on a light coat of MinWax Wood Finish to seal it.

I also think these shelves would look great painted a fun bright color for a kids bedroom or playroom!
We literally just drilled these suckers right into a stud in the wall without trying to hide the screws because I knew I would be able to hide them later with frames. Super easy!

Here are a few of the close ups of things I used to fill my shelves. Lots of pictures of miss caroline of course, a few bible verses, a wooden "H" that I painted and covered with burlap, the word "JOY", a cheap mirror from Ikea and a small white ceramic owl. Aren't you just loving cute owls these days?

I also made "Date that Made our Family" print that I saw on facebook. Easy, easy and very cute. AND framed our Family vision statement over a piece of burlap. Everything adds a personal touch to our Den. These shelves are fun because of the possibility of changing out items with the seasons. I already have some fun fall ideas rolling around in my head! :)

The Hawk's Nest Living Room

Jay and I have been refocusing some {extra?} energy into our house recently. I always seem to kinda have a project or two in the works, but recently we finished a few things in our living room. I am planning to go room by room shortly and update all that we have done to our house since we purchased it a little over a year ago.

As for the living room or Den {we seem to call the room both names at different times}, it has been decided that this is the most awkwardly positioned space. It is long and skinny with all the windows on one wall and no real way to create good flow while remaining functional for watching TV or having a conversation. We are fairly happy {as much as we will be with the furniture we currently own or without knocking down a wall} with what we have created for ourselves...
Oh, and please ignore the computer and Caroline's toy bag, and Bella's Dog bed... hey, its a real life glimpse at how our house actually looks because we do live in this space...

Just for fun and comparison, here are a few before pictures:
 So first off, I promptly threw away the hideous silk flowers from the fire place and the nasty curtains from the windows. Once that was taken care of we proceeded to paint all the trim white and replace all the outlet covered with white ones {nasty almond/beige should be outlawed from the possibilities of trim paint colors, AND from the shelves at Lowes for purchasing options of outlet covers! Can I get an Amen?!}

Its hard to tell in the above photo but the baseboard trim was actually almond and the crown molding was white. Can't explain that one to you...

We also painted the walls a color called Stonington Gray. It is a great neutral color that lightened up our narrow room and incorporated some beige and gray tones. We used this color throughout our stairwell and both hallways downstairs and upstairs. Can you tell we really love this color!
Jay also removed the track lighting, mudded and patched the holes, and repainted the ceiling. He is a beast, that man of mine :)
New ceiling fan was also a huge MUST.

This looks SO much better now!

The picture above is one of those "This is what I ideally want here, but it will do for now, and is better than a blank wall" pictures... Do you have any of those in your home? Still on the search for what would work perfectly in that space.

I do really like the plates {they might find a re-located home at some point too?} but I did make them myself... well I bought the plates for super cheap at target and used an oil based ceramic sharpie pen to write "pray", "be thankful", and "rejoice" on them.
1 Thessalonians 5:18 is a verse that God has continued to place on my heart recently. It is pretty much sums up what I need to spend my time doing. Choosing to pray when overwhelmed, be thankful for the millions of blessings in my life {even when frustrated or exhausted or lonely}, and rejoice when I feel like complaining.  I am a big fan of placing these kinds of reminders around our home. I for sure need it!
My dear friend Shannon built one of these shelves in her beautiful home and I fell in love. She shared this tutorial with me, and I am so thrilled with how ours turned out.

I am planning to share more about our shelves and decorations for them next week!
They really are the perfect thing for our super long wall to provide interest, take up space, and big bonus - they were VERY cheap to make!
I am a big fan of this tray from Target. It helps me to wrangle in all our items that seem to find themselves all over the den like remotes and magazines and even screw drivers... strange coffee table item I know, but hey at least the chaos is contained!
We also sanded and restrained our mantle and are much happier with a darker wood color. Its about time for some fall mantle decorations!

P.S. I got our awesome wooden cow at the Black Dog Salvage in Roanoke. SUCH a neat place!
Our curtains {barely visible in the above photo, there is a better picture of them above!} are these from Target. Love the texture, and the fact that they are dark, but let in lots of light. I took out the original hems and re-hemmed them to be longer, in order to hang them a little closer to the ceiling and make the room feel bigger.
Next up is re-painting / staining this side table. I do not like the orange-y color that it currently is, and I am thinking about either sanding it down and staining the same color as the mantle or trying out Chalk Paint. Suggestions?
And last but not least, one of the BEST parts about our living room... Sweet Bella girl napping on the floor. She makes my heart happy.
This sweet angel makes my heart very happy too!
Love to see her playing on the Den floor :)
A quick smile for you!

Happy Labor Day weekend!
